Really? The Weather Channel?

NBC Universal just closed a deal to purchase the Weather Channel from Landmark Communications.
The price tag? $3.5 billion.
$3.5 BILLION.
And Landmark originally sought a price of $5 BILLION.
Let's put this into perspective a little bit, in 2006 Paramount bought Dreamworks SKG for approximately $1.6 billion... that was an entire studio.
I realize that it possibly has the most universal appeal of any channel, and the deal also included 50% ownership in a few major Canadian weather services. But seriously, with internet weather sites and phones that provide forecasts for the entire planet, does the Weather Channel really have a strong enough future to make it over twice as valuable as Spielberg's studio?

Something to Look Forward to

While bumbling through IMDB, I found an interesting item.
Extract is something to get excited about. If the casting item is correct, I believe that the combo of Jason Bateman and Mike Judge will be one of the best things to happen to film in a long while. Besides, with how brilliantly wonderful
Idiocracy is, I can't help but get excited for a new Judge film.
However, in other Judge news, it has been rumored that Beavis and Butthead will, once again, make their big screen debut--in the flesh. Apparently rejecting the idea for years, Judge has decided that he could see some potential in such a venture, including the casting of John Heder and Sean William Scott as the famous duo. Take it however you want, but it can't be any worse of an idea than remaking
Short Circuit.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I think Sylvan Chomet (
Triplets of Belleville) is one of the better things to happen to animation in a long time. And while his newest film,
The Illustionist, isn't due out until 2009--and that's the UK date, who knows if we'll get it--I'd be excited to see the new footage, which will apparently debut at
Cannes.
Cross your fingers and hope that not only does his newest film come to stateside theatres, but that someone will leak the footage onto YouTube or some such. I'll try to keep you posted.
Too Many

It seems that lately there's been a major Hollywood death ever month or two. Tonight, it was announced that, at the age of 84, Charlton Heston passed away. Though he has come under fire in recent years for his politics, he was undeniably a cinematic icon. He was the face of an incredible amount of movies that will be remembered as long as cinema itself. To name a few, there was Planet of the Apes, Ben-Hur, The Omega Man, and The Ten Commandments. Toss personal politics aside, please, and take a moment to respect the passing of a legend.
